Bevel – Accentuating Design Details

The bevel effect is one of the most commonly seen features in 3D logos and professional graphic design. The word ‘bevel’ (originally used in the context of woodworking) means the non-perpendicular angle or inclination of one surface to another surface. In the context of professional graphics design or corporate graphics design, bevel means pretty much the same- a shadow not perpendicular to an image is employed to give a better 3 dimensional feel to an image.

Bevel effect and its types
The bevel effect is applied or used to create a 3D effect to an image. Basically, it does so by creating a shadow at an angle other than 90 degree to the image, thus adding more depth to the image and making it appear more real.

Typically there are two types of bevel effect:

  • Outer bevel effect: As the name indicates, the outer bevel effect adds a three dimensional clear beveled edge around the periphery or outside of a layer. The size of the selected portion of the image is expanded by the width of the bevel.
  • Inner bevel effect: The inner bevel effect on the other hand, uses the very own pixels if the image to produce the three dimensional effect. This effect curves the inner edges of an image without increasing the size of the image.

In both the types of bevel effect, the user can choose from a range of pre-sets and twiddle with various effects like the ‘frame effect’, smoothness, bevel width, depth, ambience, shininess, color, elevation, angle and so on to achieve the desired effect.

More about the bevel effect
The beveled edges facilitate the user with a vast amount of control. With the option of ‘blending modes’ the user can create realistic photos or images. With ‘bevel’ the editor can not just change the direction and lightning source of the bevel but can also alter the thickness, depth and softness of the bevel. Another outstanding feature of the bevel effect is the ‘contours control’- it lets you try out the preset options or create one of your own. This flexibility of the bevel effect makes it an important feature in corporate graphic design where one creates one’s own brand logos or exclusive trademark symbols.
